L'Orange! C'est la debacle!

The Old Lower House of Parliament, The Hague

When in Holland do as the Dutch do!

Yesterday, my last at Renkum, we went to The Hague. This is the seat of government and where Roy grew up and in part so did Anke. It is a lovely city with trams reminding me a little of home. We visited some of their friends and spent time at the Mauritshuis Museum, drinking on the Plein (the Square) ending the trip with a nice Indonesian meal including Anke's brother Henk who was recently in Australia. Roy and Anke have very strong personal and professional bonds with Indonesia.

A great final day for me but not for the Dutch people whose team was beaten by a Guus Hiddink lead Russia in the quarter finals of the European Cup. Oh well, at least this house is philosophical about it.

I am disappointed with the Dutch! In the photo of you all drinking coffee, 3 out of the 4 cars are large petrol guzzlers.

The disappointments continue closer to home, the Pies almost beat the Doggies with an undermanned team. Pies down by 10 pts.

Bill

If at least Bill was the anonymous commentator, he should be the last to say something of our coffee drinks. When staying with us I cannot even get him to drink a glass of beer! Two additional remarks. Bernie, you were lucky to have left Renkum in time. Not long after your departure there was a huge thunderstorm over the Arnhem area (including the National Park as far as Apeldoorn)with hail stones as big as pigeon eggs and winds uprooting trees! Secondly, there still is a "Mass" in the message of June 15, first sentence: the Mass entering Holland=the Maas entering the Netherlands.

Roy

Ah the miracle worker. In Guus we trust - sorry to all you Dutch readers of this blog, but the knowledge that the national team was beaten by a team managed by one of your own might soften the blow. It takes a Dutchman to beat the Dutch, look at it that way!

In parochial sporting news, Richmond beat Port in Adelaide by 4 points after letting them close a more substantial lead. I'm lucky enough to have some tickets to go see next week's game, thanks to Peter.

Does anyone else think the "word verification" words that you need to type before submitting comments have come straight out of a Dutch dictionary? Today's one for me is "zjnkuevr"

Hi Bernie,
Sounds like the trip is going well.
Thought I should give feedback on the doggies 10 point win over Collingwood. A very pelasant afternoon for me. Would have been better if Collingwood hadn't been a chance right up to the final siren. I was denied one of the purest pleasures imaginable - watching downcast Collingwood supporters leaving the ground at about the 10 minute mark of the last quarter when they realise that defeat is inevitable. Seriously though, I almost admired Collingwood's effort in doing so well - they were very undermanned.

Hi Bernie,
I have tried to reach you by other email, but one message was bounced and the other got an out-of-office reply. Nevertheless, would you please take a look into your office inbox as I do not know of any other way to reach you. Thanks,
Roy

What a pathetic comment Bill! You could have had a smaller car than the one you have; or you could have had a hybrid. I'm just waiting for the Smart diesel.
Bernie, we had another boys' night out to a movie and dinner last Friday night: Bill, Greg, Hans, Roger, Barry from Bentleigh, and me. Saw "Mongol". Think we all thought it was ok and glad we didn't take our women.
I cycled in to see North and Hawthorn at MCG on Sat arvo with daughter. North won an ordinary game in which Buddy Franklin hardly featured.
Ben Cousins is talking about a comeback; Dogs and Carlton don't want him but I'd take him at Richmond. No comment from Pies as yet.
Rocca out for 8 (ankle) - shouldn't do them any harm.
You travelogue is good reading Bernie. Margaret was reading it a few nights ago and thought it was very good.
Off to Euroa tomorrow night for the weekend. Will be checking out new gas heaters installed a fortnight ago which we haven't seen yet.
Regards
Jim
